Young Serbian Basketball Stars Featured at Serb Fest Historical Exhibit

posted by dorothyp on Aug 14th, 2010 at 10:54 am
As you well know, Serbs are great basketball players. This year was a big year for local Serbian high school players from Wheeler High School in Valparaiso, who won the Indiana State High School Basketball Class 2A Championship. Media attention was drawn to the fact that 3 key players on the team were Serbian: Aleksa Kojcinovic, Petar Todorovic, and Eric Wise.
Also, the Wheeler championship game commentator was coaching legend Dan Dakich, college basketball IU star who was coached by Bobby Knight and later became his assistant coach. His claim to fame was his stellar defense against Michael Jordan in the 1984 East Regional Semifinal.
All three players attended Serb Fest and were treated like celebrities as they posed for photos next to their exhibit. Petar will attend Purdue University, Eric will attend Ivy Tech Community College in Bloomington his first year, then Indiana University, and Aleksa, a student from Montenegro, will finish his senior year at La Lumiere Prep School in LaPorte. Wheeler fans showed their support for the boys by cheering S-E-R-B-I-A! during many of the games.
Nick Ajder, 15 year old Clark Middle School student, received a last-minute invitation to try out for the state free-throw competition in Indianapolis. He WON! Congrats, Nick! The Historical Exhibit for Serb Fest this year featured "Serbs In Sports" and also honored the Serbian Sisters Circle.
