Video - ONE LOVE SERBIAN SONG - Next Generation
Young voices filled the room and our hearts with songs. The next generation of singers has reassured us that we will not lose our musical traditions. The junior choirs stole the show during the concert and brought many in the audience to cheers and tears. Congratulations to the Mass Junior Chorus and Junior Brankies for sharing their talents.

Video - ONE LOVE SERBIAN SONG - Combined Choir Medley
Good things do come in three's; three choirs of course. Aleksa Shantich from South Bend, SSS St. Elijah and SSS Karageorge, both from Merrillville, were directed by Milan Medich of South Bend. We all know how much fun they had at practice, especially at Nick and Melanie Sever's house. The historic ONE LOVE SERBIAN SONG Festival did much more than unite choirs for 3 days of fabulous music to warm our hearts. It brought new friendships and hopes for future generations of singers as we witnessed the children's choirs. This event was so well planned and we congratulate both parishes for their hard work and hospitality.

Video and Photos - Choir Practice at Nick and Melanie's
Lake Michigan's Ogden Dunes shore on a rainy Sunday afternoon - could this be choir practice? Nick and Melanie Sever opened their home and hearts once again to host a practice session for the combined choirs of Merrillville and South Bend, Indiana. Two different time zones and up to 90 minutes of travel can't discourage this group. St. Elijah Cathedral Choir, Aleksa Shantich Choir, and S.S.S. Karageorge will perform together for the first time at the upcoming "One Love" Choir Festival in Chicago. Two hours of intense practice were followed by a little kolo dancing, great food, and lots of hugs and kisses. Oh, yes, and John Japa's homemade goulash was incredible. New friendships are the best result of this combined effort. If you have the opportunity to participate next year, you certainly won't regret it.
Steve Baroevich, Dan Orlich, Mike Jaksich, and Nick Sever accompany the choir on their tamburas........Thanks, guys!

Full-time deda, part-time choir director, Milan Medich is obviously very loved!

Video Highlights from Easter Sunday Divine Liturgy
The doors of the Iconostasis and Church are left open during the entire Liturgy on Easter Sunday, proclaiming the "Light and Joy of the Resurrection". At the conclusion of Divine Liturgy the priest proclaims "Christ is Risen!" and the people respond "Indeed, He is Risen!". Also sung throughout the service is The Paschal Troparion, the Great Hymn of the Resurrection of Christ. This Great Hymn of Pascha will be sung repeatedly in the weeks to come. Notice of Special Meeting - Sunday, April 11th
Dear Member,
On Sunday, April 11, 2010 a "Special Meeting" will be held at 1:30 pm in the South Wing Social Center to bring up an innovative idea for discussion.
Looking to the future we would like to research the idea of constructing an "Assisted Living" complex on our Church property.
This project would need the majority of support of our Church Membership before we can even begin to investigate all that would be involved. There is much research required to determine how to build, where to build, how to finance it, and how to fill it.
This meetng is not to decide if we do or do not build Assisted Living: this is to decide if you, the membership, want us to research the possibilities of doing so.
In order to go forward with the required research it will take time and some money and before the process is started we would need the approval of the majority of the membership.
It is very important that we have as many members as possible in attendance at this meeting. Please make every attempt possible to attend on Sunday April 11.
This is NOT an Extraordinary Meeting, this is a Special Meeting for the discussion of exploring the opportunities of bringing Assisted Living to our Church and your opinion whether we should or should not do so is important.
Thank you and please enjoy a Blessed Holy Week.
Sincerely,
Dennis Svilar

We have a historic chance in April 2010 to act and count ourselves as Americans of Serbian heritage in the official 2010 Census. In April 2009, the Serbian Unity Congress signed an agreement with the 2010 Census to act as the official partner of the US Census.

Photos from St. Sava Day
On Saturday, January 23, several children came to the south wing kitchen to get hands-on experience making the Kolach and Zito for their St. Sava Day Celebration. Under the supervision of Sonja Mancich and Ann Rudman, they created a beautifully decorated Kolach and Zito. Thanks to Beba Rudman, Zorka Glumac, and Danica Beslich for their help in the kitchen Sunday, and to Marie Baroevich for all the hard work and planning. Along with a bouquet of flowers, sincere Thanks were expressed to Teta Joanne Samardzija for sharing her personal talents and time teaching and rehearsing songs for this year's St. Sava Day program.
After the program, the children were treated to cash prizes and 3-foot long licorice.
3 Videos from St. Sava Day - Poems - Deklamacije
Once again, the children learned to recite lengthy poems for everyone's enjoyment, only two weeks after their Christmas program. The south wing was packed full of proud parents and grandparents, who also helped the children practice their poems. Great Job, Kids!

Palachinka Song, S-E-R-B-I-A-N Song, and More on Video
Yes, Simon, Serbian children can sing. In two languages, in fact! As is our tradition, Sunday School children recited poetry and sang several songs for their proud parents, babas, and dedas. St. Sava Day celebrates the patron saint of all Serbian children. The Palachinka Song and S-E-R-B-I-A-N Song are the creative works of Joanne Samardzija, who also taught the musical performances and accompanied on piano. Enjoy the video below and check back soon for more photos and videos from this wonderful program.
St. Sava Day Program This Sunday, January 24

St. Sava from Wikipedia ( Read More)
Saint Archbishop Sava (Serbian:, Sveti Sava; (c. 1175, Ras - January 14, 1235, Trnovo, Bulgaria), baptised name Rastko Nemanji? (Serbian: ) was the youngest son of Serbian ruler Stefan Nemanja, Eastern Orthodox monk, first archbishop of Serbian Orthodox Church, diplomat, writer, law giver and founder of several important medieval monasteries. He heavily influenced Serbian medieval literature and art.
He is widely considered as one of the most important figures of Serbian history and he is canonized and venerated by the Serbian Orthodox Church. Also his life and personal devotion has been interpreted in many artistic works from the middle ages to modern times. The Temple of Saint Sava in Belgrade is his major shrine and the largest Eastern Orthodox church.
Photos from Badnje Vece 2010 Christmas Eve
Hundreds of Serbs, young and old, braved the cold weather and threat of a snow storm to participate in evening Vespers and burning of the Badnjak. A large heated tent was set up to accomodate the huge crowd and made a cozy place to visit with friends and relatives. Our Kolo Sisters served up lenten sandwiches and fruit trays for refreshments. The traditional "vruca rakija" helped keep everyone warm as holiday greetings and gifts were exchanged. (Click small photos to enlarge)
