Don't go out until the snow plows and sanding trucks have had a chance to do their work, and allow yourself extra time to reach your destination. If you must drive in snowy conditions, make sure your car is prepared (TIPS), and that you know how to handle road conditions.

It's helpful to practice winter driving techniques in a snowy, open parking lot, so you're familiar with how your car handles. Consult your owner's manual for tips specific to your vehicle.

Driving safely on icy roads

1. Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. You should allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you.

2. Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake.

3. Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists.

4. Keep your lights and windshield clean.

5. Use low gears to keep traction, especially on hills.

6. Don't use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads.

7. Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses and infrequently traveled roads, which will freeze first. Even at temperatures above freezing, if the conditions are wet, you might encounter ice in shady areas or on exposed roadways like bridges.

1. Take your foot off the accelerator.

2. Steer in the direction you want the front wheels to go. If your rear wheels are sliding left, steer left. If they're sliding right, steer right.

3. If your rear wheels start sliding the other way as you recover, ease the steering wheel toward that side. You might have to steer left and right a few times to get your vehicle completely under control.

4. If you have standard brakes, pump them gently.

5. If you have anti-lock brakes (ABS), do not pump the brakes. Apply steady pressure to the brakes. You will feel the brakes pulse — this is normal.

If your front wheels skid:

1. Take your foot off the gas and shift to neutral, but don't try to steer immediately.

2. As the wheels skid sideways, they will slow the vehicle and traction will return. As it does, steer in the direction you want to go. Then put the transmission in "drive" or release the clutch, and accelerate gently.

If you get stuck:

1. Do not spin your wheels. This will only dig you in deeper.

2. Turn your wheels from side to side a few times to push snow out of the way.

3. Use a light touch on the gas, to ease your car out.

4. Use a shovel to clear snow away from the wheels and the underside of the car.

5. Pour sand, kitty litter, gravel or salt in the path of the wheels, to help get traction.

6. Try rocking your vehicle. (Check your owner's manual first — it can damage the transmission on some vehicles.) Shift from forward to reverse, and back again. Each time you're in gear, give a light touch on the gas until the vehicle gets going.

According to the recall notice, mold can develop between the removable seat cushion and the hard plastic frame of the sleeper when it remains wet/moist or is infrequently cleaned, posing a risk of exposure to mold to infants sleeping in the product. The CPSC advises that mold has been associated with respiratory illnesses and other infections.

The recalled Fisher-Price Newborn Rock 'n Play Sleepers were sold at various mass merchandise stores nationwide and online since September 2009 for between $50 and $85. Units currently in retail stores are not affected by this recall to inspect. Only products that show signs of mold after use by consumers are included in this announcement.

According to the recall notice, the fuel filter can leak, posing a fire hazard.  Kawasaki Motors has received 110 reports of fuel leaks. No injuries reported.

The recall includes Kawasaki FH, FR, FS and FX series engines used in riding and wide area, walk-behind lawnmowers made and sold under the following brand names: Ariens, Bad Boy Mowers, Big Dog, Bob-Cat, Bush Hog, Country Clipper, Cub Cadet, Dixie Chopper, Dixon, DR Power Equipment, Encore, Exmark, Ferris, Gravely, Hustler, Husqvarna, Land Pride, SCAG, Simplicity, Snapper Pro, Tiger Corp, Toro, Worldlawn and Woods. Engines may have also have been bought separately and used in other lawn mowers. Recalled engines are 13 to 36 horsepower, air-cooled, v-twin engines. “Kawasaki” and the model number are printed on the top of all of the engines. In addition, the spec and serial numbers are printed on a label on one side of the engine.

The recalled engines were sold at authorized Kawasaki small engine dealers and lawn and garden equipment retailers nationwide. The recalled units were sold between October 2011 and August 2012 for between $2000 and $10,000.

According to GM, the recall affected Chevy Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura cars from model years 2007 through 2010 and equipped with four-speed automatic transmissions.

This recall involves battery-powered Range Rider ride-on toy cars with an off-road vehicle body style and plastic tires. The ride-on cars were sold in pink and tan colors.

The recalled cars were sold through Fingerhut catalogs and online at Fingerhut.com and Gettington.com from September 2010 through May 2012 for between $200 and $230.

According to the recall notice, various models of Huffy, Iron Horse, Mongoose, Northwoods, Pacific, Razor and Schwinn bicycles, sold by Meijer are being recalled since, the pedals on the bicycles can loosen or detach during use, posing a fall hazard to the rider.

According to the CPSC, many deaths and injuries occur when an inexperienced driver loses control of an ATV, is thrown from an ATV, overturns the vehicle, or collides with a fixed object or a motor vehicle. ATV drivers with more than one year of experience have a much lower risk of injury than relatively new drivers.

Training can bridge that gap by showing new drivers how to handle multiple off-road riding situations. Retailers and organizations around the country offer hands-on training to help riders gain experience and learn safe riding practices.

CPSC offers the following guidelines to help riders recognize hazards and make riding both fun and safe:

• All ATV drivers, adults and children, should take a hands-on ATV safety course from a certified instructor.
• Always wear protective gear - especially a helmet - when riding ATVs.
• Do not ride on a single-rider ATV as a passenger or carry a passenger if you drive one.
• Never allow more people on any ATV than the vehicle was designed to carry.
• Do not drive ATVs on paved roads. ATVs have solid rear axles, which make turning on paved surfaces difficult and dangerous and increase the risk of the ATV overturning or hitting another object, such as a tree or car.
• Do not permit children younger than 16 years old to drive or ride adult ATVs. Children younger than 16 years old lack the developmental skills to safely drive adult ATVs, and more than 90 percent of all injuries to children involve this scenario. Likewise, children younger than 6 should never be on an ATV - either as a driver or passenger.

According to the recall notice, the activity tray on the high chair can unexpectedly detach and allow an unrestrained child to fall, posing a risk of injury to the child.

The notice states the recall involves Evenflo high chairs that convert from a high chair to toddler-size table and chair. The convertible high chair can be identified by the model names and numbers listed below. Model numbers are located on a label on the lower portion of one of the high chair's legs.

The recalled Evenflo High Chairs were sold at Toys "R" Us and Walmart stores nationwide and online at Walmart.com and Wayfair.com between December 2011 and June 2012 for about $40.

The Northwest Indiana personal injury law firm, Schlyer & Associates, the Aggressive Trial Lawyers, is warning of a recall of nearly 87,000 Jeep Wranglers according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Chrysler.

The risk of fire is forcing Jeep to recall nearly 87,000 Wranglers in the U.S., Canada and other parts of the world.  About 68,000 of those were sold in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The government has received reports of 14 fires – though no claims of injuries or fatalities connected to the problem.  According to the recall notice, the issue appears to be centered around a skid plate that makes it possible for debris to collect and press up against the SUV’s catalytic converter.  Because of the high heat that can lead to a fire.

The recall is limited to Wranglers equipped with automatic transmissions built during the 2010 model-year.  Owners of vehicles produced before July 14, 2010 will receive a notification in the coming weeks and will be advised when they can schedule a free repair with a nearby dealer.

The recalled items were sold at specialty bicycle stores nationwide and on various websites from December 2005 through August 2010 for between $400 and $925 for Chariot bicycle trailers and from October 2002 through August 2011 for between $40 and $70 for bicycle trailer conversion kits.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall of 898,000 packages of Rugby's Children's Pain & Fever Concentrated Drops the Merrillville personal injury law firm of Schlyer & Associates is warning.

According to the recall notice, this over the counter medicine contains acetaminophen which calls for child-resistant packaging as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. Although the original bottle has child-resistant packaging, a separate dropper unit provided for dispensing the drug to children does not. When in use, a child can access the medicine, posing serious health problems or death if more than the recommended dosage is consumed.  The recall involves Rugby Children's Pain & Fever Concentrated Drops (Acetaminophen Drops) in a 1/2 fl. oz. (15 ml) bottle size. The UPC code 305361936723 can be found with the bar code at the bottom of the box.

The product was sold at drug stores, grocery stores and other retailers nationwide between January 2009 and June 2011 for about $4.

According to the recall, Circo Aloma Infant Girls Sandals are recalled, since the decorative plastic flowers can detach, posing a choking hazard.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice, the recalled infant girls sandals are white with decorative plastic flowers attached to the toes and sides. The sandals were sold under the style name "Aloma" in infant girls' sizes 2 through 5. "Circo" is printed on the inside and bottom of the shoe.

The recalled sandals were only sold at Target stores and Target.com nationwide from January 2011 to May 2011 for about $10.

If you have any of the recalled sandals, you should stop using the sandals and return them to any Target store to receive a full refund or call Target at (800) 440-0680.

• Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.

 

• Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper because this is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays and that they could pose a danger to consumers.

 

• Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Parents don’t realize that young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals.

 

• Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.

 

• Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.

 

• Never point or throw fireworks at another person.

 

• Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.

 

• Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.

 

• Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.

 

• After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.

 

• Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of 35,000 Animated Safari and Aquarium Lamps sold by Christmas Tree Shops the Northwest Indiana personal injury law firm of Schlyer & Associates is warning.

According to the recall notice, defective wiring in the lamps can cause an electrical short, posing fire and shock hazards to consumers.  The recalled items were sold at Christmas Tree Shops stores primarily in the New England, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest regions from December 2009 through May 2011 for between $7 and $8.

If you have one of the recalled lights, you should immediately stop using the recalled lamps and return them to Christmas Tree Shops store for a full refund.
