Grub Box Nourishes West Oakland

People's Grocery runs several programs to build local food systems in West Oakland. I remember seeing their mobile grocery van parked in different spots of the neighborhood (program currently on hiatus). We really need programs like these because West Oakland doesn't have a grocery store. Residents have to travel downtown or to Emeryville for groceries. Or settle for a mini-mart diet.

That's where People's Grocery comes in. Their latest project, dubbed Grub Box, is a unique approach to providing fresh food to West Oakland residents. The Grub Box is delivered weekly containing fresh fruits and vegetables from their farm. They offer two price options:
Our production cost per Grub Box is about $18.

We sell the “Resident” Grub Box to low-income families and individuals in West Oakland for $12 - a $6 discount off of our production costs.

We sell the “Sponsor” Grub Box to families and individuals who live in the greater East Bay and are of able economic means for $24 - a $6 markup on our production costs.

It's all about making fresh and healthy foods accessible to the community. I think this is great.
